PLAYPOWER

We support affordable, effective, fun learning games. We're starting with an existing $10 TV-computer as a platform for learning games in the developing world.

Playpower kicks off the day at ETech 09

Brady Forrest introducing the "$20 Computer"

Thanks for letting Playpower start the first day of talks at ETech 09! As people walked in, 8-bit music was playing from chiptune artists around the world playing, including GOTO80, Nullsleep, Starpause, Firebrand Boy, Trash80, Paza, and minusbaby.

In case you were wondering, SF local Starpause will be playing a live set at our presentation at 4:10pm, today. He’s in the SF chiptune party crew DUTYCYCLE. The global 8-bit chiptune scene has been extremely helpful to playpower.org, and for that, we thank you.

(Thanks, Alasdair!)

  • For the target, flash makes a lot more sense than CD's ... less than $1 in hardware to read SD flash, and copies of files can be shared from one system to another.

The idea of CAL (=computer assisted learning) on cheap hardware sounds great, but running high quality software on 8-bit hardware is ridiculous.

There are a lot of affordable 32-bit systems based on VIA, Rise m6 or MIPS/Dragon. Just check-out alibaba.com. Complete desktop pcs for 20 to 50 usd!

Spreading software on rom or flash modules is also everything but a good idea. Consider dvd or cd-r as cheap medium.

    Cheers,
